Frequently Asked Questions
What is a struck-by hazard?
Any incident in which a worker is hit by a moving object, tool, vehicle, machine or other equipment is classified as a struck-by injury. Approximately 75% of struck-by injuries involve traffic or moving vehicles.
This broad category includes impacts with everything from falling bricks and rocks kicked up by landscaping equipment to runaway vehicles or loads swinging from a crane.
How many categories of struck-by hazards are there?
OSHA recognizes four major categories for these incidents. Incidents are categorized by the motion of the object that strikes the victim. They are:
- Flying objects
- Falling objects
- Swinging objects
- Rolling objects
A single incident may involve several categories of hazards. For instance, a swinging chain could knock over a worker on a roof and tip over a stack of tiles onto people working below.
