About Forklift Certification Training

Our OSHA-accepted Forklift Certification course teaches individuals to safely operate forklifts and satisfies the formal training requirement for forklift certification. You must be 18 years old to operate a forklift. This two-hour course is appropriate for workers in construction or general industry and does not apply to agriculture workers or workers who operate farm vehicles.

The Forklift Certification course meets OSHA training requirements for the following types of forklifts:

  • Class I: Electric motor rider trucks
  • Class II: Electric motor narrow aisle trucks

How Long Does Forklift Certification Last?

Your forklift certification card will remain valid for three years. When your certification expires, you will need to complete a performance evaluation with your employer to remain forklift certified. OSHA Education Center also recommends forklift refresher training at least once every three years.

About Pallet Jack Certification

What Jobs Require Pallet Jack Certification Training?

Warehouse workers and other employees who operate electric pallet jacks — also known as pump trucks, pallet trucks and hand trucks — must become certified to use this equipment. Personnel must be at least 18 years old to begin the certification process. OSHA-accepted training is required before taking certification exams.

How Long Does Pallet Jack Certification Last?

Your certification is valid for three years. To maintain your certification, you will need to take an employer-led operator evaluation before your current certification expires.

OSHA does not mandate retraining every three years, but employers may require you to retake the course to refresh your safety knowledge. However, OSHA requires refresher training if you unsafely operate a pallet jack, cause an accident or are involved in other safety-related incidents specified in the OSHA standard for powered industrial trucks.

PIT Certification Training FAQs

What is the process for powered industrial truck certification?

In general, the certification process includes:

  • Formal instruction. You will complete a 100% online training course that meets OSHA training requirements. You can download a digital certificate upon completion.
  • Hands-on training. Your employer will provide an on-site equipment demonstration and explain how to navigate hazards.
  • Operator evaluation. Your manager or supervisor will assess your safety knowledge and lead you through a behind-the-wheel operator evaluation that satisfies OSHA requirements.

This process applies to certification for forklifts, telehandlers and pallet jacks.

Will my certification card be accepted nationwide?

Yes. Within 5-7 days of completing your training for forklift, telehandler or pallet jack certification, you will receive a plastic certification card that is accepted in every state. Your certification card will arrive in the mail. In order to fully satisfy OSHA certification requirements, you must pass an employer-led operator evaluation.

How long will my certification be valid?

Your PIT certification card will remain valid for three years. To maintain your certification once it expires, you must pass another employer-led operator evaluation. OSHA Education Center recommends that all powered industrial truck operators complete refresher training every three years to stay up to date on safe operating procedures.
