Who Needs 10-Hour Washington OSHA Training for Construction?

This course package is designed for entry-level construction workers in Washington state. It includes both state and federal safety education for industry-specific health and safety topics.

Evergreen State residents are protected by the regulations set forth in Washington's OSHA-Approved State Plan. Nearly all construction sites in the state must observe federal and local worker protections.

Federal guidelines set the minimum standard for worker safety. However, L&I rules found in WISHA and other state laws supersede the national requirements with the goal of providing even safer working environments.

Every Washington construction worker should understand the laws and rights that protect them on the job.

Washington OSHA FAQs

What is the difference between Washington OSHA and federal OSHA?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, creates and enforces nationwide standards that ensure safe and healthful working conditions for workers in many industries, including construction. These rules apply to all 50 states and other U.S. territories.

Some states, including Washington, maintain State Plans. These OSHA-approved plans must meet or exceed OSHA's rules. Washington's State Plan creates extra guidelines that guarantee even safer working conditions for employees in the Evergreen State.

Will my Washington certificate and OSHA 10 card expire?

No. Neither credential has an expiration date. However, periodic retraining is suggested at least every three years. Additionally, some employers may require you to complete refresher training to ensure you are up to date on the latest rules and regulations for your job.

Contact your employer for more information about safety training policies for your worksite.

How long will it take to complete the course?

The full program takes approximately thirteen hours to finish, split between 10 hours of OSHA-authorized Outreach Training content and three hours of Washington-specific L&I safety training.

Federal regulations set a maximum of 7.5 hours per day for OSHA Outreach Training. That means it will take you a minimum of two calendar days to complete the full program. WA L&I training does not count toward the 7.5-hour maximum.

What is an OSHA 10 DOL card?

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issues OSHA 10 cards to workers who complete 10 hours of OSHA-authorized Outreach Training on industry-specific workplace safety topics. These wallet-sized cards are printed on durable plastic and are accepted nationwide as proof of training.

An OSHA 10 card is appropriate for entry-level construction workers and trade specialists. Supervisors, forepersons and safety personnel require additional training, which can be found in the Washington State Plan course for supervisors.
