Testing Requirements

Washington 30-Hour Training for Construction includes 30 hours of OSHA-authorized Outreach Training and approximately three additional hours of training specific to Washington's OSHA-approved State Plan. Finishing both portions will award you an L&I training Certificate of Completion and a DOL-issued OSHA 30 card.

Across both the Washington-specific course and the OSHA-authorized Outreach Training program, you will be asked to complete a total of 27 end-of-module quizzes and a 20-question final exam.

Washington OSHA Testing

The eight modules in the state portion each end with a five-question quiz. You have three attempts to score at least 70%. If you fail any quiz three times in a row, you will have to start over by purchasing the course again.

OSHA Outreach Testing

The federal portion of the course includes nineteen chapters, each with an end-of-module quiz. You must score at least 70% on each quiz to advance to the next lesson. Each quiz allows three attempts.

After finishing all lessons and quizzes, you must answer a 20-question final exam. You must score 70% or more to pass. Failing any quiz or the final exam three times will lock you out of the course. If that happens, you can purchase the course again to start over.

Washington OSHA FAQs

What makes Washington OSHA different from federal OSHA?

OSHA is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. OSHA creates and enforces nationwide standards. OSHA rules apply to all 50 states and all U.S. territories. Those regulations serve as minimum requirements. Individual states can apply extra protections.

Washington, under L&I, operates an OSHA-approved State Plan. The extra guidelines found in WISHA guarantee even safer working conditions for Washington construction workers.

Employers in the Evergreen State must meet both sets of requirements.

Do Washington certificates and OSHA 30 cards expire?

Neither certificate expires. That doesn't mean you should never repeat your training. Industry best practices highly suggest you take this course again every three years to stay up to date on new regulations and changing standards.

Your employer may have its own retraining criteria. Contact your supervisor for more information about the requirements for your role.

How long are these courses?

Both programs can be completed in approximately 33 hours. Washington-specific L&I training lasts roughly three hours, while the additional OSHA-authorized Outreach Training covers 30 hours of national safety curriculum.

OSHA allows a maximum of 7.5 hours of Outreach Training per day. You must spend a minimum of four calendar days on OSHA 30 training, but you are allowed to take as long as you like to master the material. Washington-specific training does not count toward the OSHA daily maximum.

What is an OSHA 30 DOL card?

All valid OSHA 30 cards are issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Official cards are only provided to workers who complete 30 hours of OSHA-authorized Outreach Training on specific workplace safety topics. Wallet-sized cards are printed on durable plastic and are accepted nationwide as proof of training.

The 30-hour program is ideal for supervisors, managers, forepersons and personnel with site safety responsibilities. We also offer a shorter version of this education package designed for entry-level workers.
