Who Needs 30-Hour Washington OSHA Training for General Industry?

This course package is ideal for supervisors and safety personnel employed in general industry — which includes most workplaces not classified as construction, agriculture or maritime.

Washington operates an OSHA-Approved State Plan that layers additional protections on top of the federal minimums established by OSHA.

The Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) is the basis of the State Plan. It meets or exceeds the requirements found in the 29 CFR 1910 standard for general industry.

Washington OSHA Testing

The eight state-specific lessons each end with a quiz. Quizzes consist of five questions. You must score at least 70% on all quizzes. You get three chances to pass each one.

OSHA Outreach Testing

Each of the 17 federal training modules ends with a brief quiz, which you must pass with a score of at least 70% before moving on to the next lesson. You have three chances to pass each one.

Washington OSHA FAQs

What is the difference between OSHA and WA L&I?

OSHA standards apply nationwide, while L&I guidelines apply only to employers and workers in Washington State.

The Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is a state-run organization designed to safeguard Washingtonians on the job. Administering the OSHA-approved Washington State Plan is one of the agency's many duties.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is charged with creating and enforcing national workplace safety standards. OSHA's rules establish the baseline for all U.S. states and territories.

Federal regulations apply to any situation not spelled out in WISHA or other Washington-specific workplace laws.

When do my OSHA 30 card and Washington training certificate expire?

Neither credential has an expiration date. However, it is best practice to repeat your training at least once every three years to refresh your knowledge and keep up with changing standards.

Your employer may have its own retraining policies. Contact your supervisor to learn more about safety training requirements for your role.

How quickly can I finish my training?

Completing both courses will take you about 33 hours. The Washington-specific content about WISHA and L&I regulations lasts approximately three hours. The remaining 30 hours of coursework teach federal workplace safety standards.

OSHA sets a maximum of 7.5 hours of Outreach lessons per day. Since the OSHA-authorized Outreach course is 30 hours long, you must spend a minimum of four calendar days on your training. You are free to split your study into as many sessions as you like and train at your own pace.

What is an OSHA 30 card?

Official OSHA 30 DOL cards are only issued to students who complete 30 hours of OSHA-authorized safety education following rigorous U.S. Department of Labor curriculum guidelines. Cards are accepted nationwide as proof of satisfactory safety training.

Each wallet-sized card is printed on durable plastic and includes the student's name, the date the card was issued and the name of the training provider.

If you are not a manager or safety professional, you should enroll in the shorter WA State Plan course instead.

How long do I have to wait for my OSHA 30 DOL card and Washington OSHA certificate?

You don't have to wait! You can immediately download and print digital copies of your Washington OSHA Certificate of Completion and your OSHA Outreach 30-hour certificate as soon as you finish all lessons and pass all assessments.

The DOL will issue your official plastic OSHA 30 wallet card. It will arrive by mail in less than two weeks.
