About Scissor Lift Certification Training
This course prepares students to understand and comply with OSHA and ANSI/SAIA operating rules for scissor lift MEWPs. Lessons prepare students to master the vertical-only movement of these Group A elevating work platforms and serve as certified scissor lift operators.

What is a MEWP?
MEWP stands for mobile elevating work platform. This broad group of machines includes all kinds of powered lifting devices designed to help workers reach elevated positions and perform tasks far above the ground.
Common examples include cherry pickers, boom lifts, scissor lifts and vertical mast lifts.
What is the difference between a MEWP and an AWP?
The terms aerial work platform (AWP) and mobile scaffolding were used to describe the machines now classified as MEWPs.
The American National Standards Institute adopted and formalized the definition of MEWP with the help of the Scaffold and Access Industry Association (SAIA) in the 2020 ANSI A92 standards update.
Are MEWPs a kind of powered industrial truck (PIT)?
No. Both types of equipment are powered lifters and haulers. But they are designed for different tasks. A MEWP moves people into hard-to-reach positions. A PIT moves cargo and equipment.
What are the different types of mobile elevating work platforms?
MEWPS are classified by group and type.
Group is determined by the platform's movement capabilities.
- Group A: The platform can freely move vertically but can only move horizontally within the machine's base or tipping lines.
- Group B: The platform can maneuver freely both vertically and horizontally, extending outside the chassis or base area.
Type describes the movement of the base.
- Type 1: The equipment can only be moved when the platform is inactive in the stowed position.
- Type 2: The device can be driven or moved while the platform is in use, but the controls are located on the base or chassis.
- Type 3: The equipment can be relocated while the platform is in use, and the controls can be used from the platform itself.
Every MEWP belongs to both a group and a type. A scissor lift, for example, may be a Group A, Type 1 device, while a self-propelled boom lift might be a Group B, Type 3 machine.
Who sets safety standards for MEWPs?
OSHA provides the legal framework for MEWP safety for most U.S. employers. Construction industry regulations are found in 29 CFR 1926.451 through 1926.454. In general industry, aerial boom lifts fall under 29 CFR 1910.67, while scissor lifts are regulated as mobile scaffolds under 29 CFR 1910.27 through 1910.29.
In both cases, OSHA uses and references ANSI standards found in A92.20, A92.22 and A92.24. ANSI establishes best practices based on the advice of industry experts. But ANSI standards are not, by themselves, laws.
Who is required to take MEWP training?
OSHA and ANSI require elevating work platform operators to receive safety training before using any MEWP. Under 29 CFR 1926.453 and ANSI A92.24, employers must certify any person who operates, supervises or occupies MEWPs before allowing them to work at height.
Certification starts with a formal safety and operation training course. Our online programs satisfy this requirement. Each MEWP course ends with a knowledge evaluation before awarding a training certificate.
After the formal or classroom portion, workers must receive hands-on instruction. Hands-on operator training must be specific to job function, individual equipment and work environment. Following training, employees must receive a practical hands-on evaluation to complete their certification.
How long is my certification valid?
Your certificate does not expire. However, it is strongly recommended that you repeat the training every three years as you continue working with this type of lifting equipment.
